World Teachers' Day is a special day for teachers all around the world. It falls on 5 October every year. The day started because of an important international agreement. In 1966, many countries signed a document about teachers' rights and their work. Years later, in 1994, UNESCO chose 5 October as World Teachers' Day. Today, more than one hundred countries mark the day.
Schools celebrate in many different ways. In some countries, students bring flowers or write thank-you cards. In other places, students prepare a short show or sing songs in the classroom. Some schools give teachers a free morning, and older students teach the lessons! Teachers often drink coffee together in the staff room and talk about their job. It is a simple day, but it shows respect for teachers everywhere.
